EXT. CAMP ENGLEHART - MUNITIONS COMPOUND - NIGHT
surrounded by fencing. A single light shines above one of
the buildings.
Two bull-necked sentries pass by on their rounds. They are
Corporals Mank and Cotler. We hold on this area after they
pass.
Col. Earnest T. Ladd, a handsome officer in his late
fifties, slips around the corner...climbs in a window.
OMITTED
INT. BUILDING - NIGHT
Ladd looks around. There are boxes and crates everywhere.
He moves forward...draws back as Sergeant Ray Perkins, lean,
mean, in his thirties...passes by close to the camera.
Perkins goes around a corner to an area illuminated by an
overhead light. Ladd -- and we -- can't see what he's
doing, but it makes a fair amount of noise.
Ladd moves ahead cautiously...stops as his hand bumps into
something. He turns on a small flashlight.
INT. WAREHOUSE - LADD'S POINT OF VIEW
He has bumped into an open can of blue paint. Brushes and
other paint cans are evident.
BACK TO SCENE
Ladd shines the light on his hand, which has blue paint on it.
LADD
(whispering)
Oh, no. My God, no!
He wipes the paint on his pants, then hurries to the window.
He slips out of the building.
OMITTED
BY FENCE
Ladd sticks the flashlight in his pocket, starts over the
fence. Halfway up, the flashlight drops to the ground.
THE FLASHLIGHT
falls on a metal drum. In the still of the night, the clang
is loud...and dangerous.
THE SENTRIES
Turn at the sound. One hits an alarm button, then they rush
off.
INT. WAREHOUSE
Sergeant Perkins is wiping blue paint off his hands when the
alarm goes off. He tosses the rag aside, grabs a .45 on a
web belt, runs out.
EXT. WAREHOUSE
Ladd jumps into a Jeep, roars off into the night. A moment
later, Cotler and Mank pull up in another Jeep. Perkins runs
out of the building, strapping on the gun belt.
PERKINS
Did you see who it was?
MANK
Yeah. Colonel Ladd.
Perkins jumps into the Jeep, alarmed.
PERKINS
We gotta stop him.
They roar off.
EXT. MILITARY BASE - NIGHT
as the three soldiers chase their superior officer. Ladd
drives desperately, but cooly. From time to time, he looks
down at his blue-stained hands.
In the other Jeep, Mank drives while Perkins takes Cotler's
AR-16, aims it.
COTLER
You can't shoot him -- there'll be
an investigation!
PERKINS
The gorge is coming up...I just want
to distract him!
He begins firing on automatic.
INT. LADD'S JEEP
Ladd ducks as bullets whizz by over his head. He swerves
all over the road.
PERKINS
keeps firing.
LADD
looks over his shoulder...looks back at the road again...too
late. He screams as ---
THE SCENE
His Jeep sails over the edge of the cliff.
THE SECOND JEEP
It slams to a halt on the edge of the gorge. The three men
look down.
PERKINS
(finally)
You know how to handle this?
MANK
(nodding)
We didn't see a thing.

A BUSY FOUR-LANE HIGHWAY - DAY
stretching into the desert. The highway is crowded with
travellers and truckers. From o.s., we hear:
K.I.T.T. (o.s.)
Michael, you're in trouble!
MICHAEL (o.s.)
(tense)
I can handle it!
K.I.T.T. (o.s.)
You have less than an eight point
seven percent chance of survival.
MICHAEL (o.s.)
I'm doing my best!
K.I.T.T. (o.s.)
Take evasive action!
MICHAEL (o.s.)
Wait! No!
CLOSE ON MONITOR SCREEN IN THE KNIGHT 2000
A simulated car crashes on the screen, with accompanying
sounds of destruction. Then the screen reads, "SORRY -
YOU'RE DEAD!" and a miniature cross springs up where the car
used to be.
As we pull back, we see that Michael has an Atari-type
control hooked up to the monitor. It's one of the "Auto
Race" games.
K.I.T.T.
Tough luck.
MICHAEL
Stupid computer games. No offense.
K.I.T.T.
Programmed by stupid humans...No
offense.
Michael looks out the window at ---
OMITTED
MICHAEL'S POINT OF VIEW
At the side of the highway is a broken down compact car.
The hood is up. Peering inside at the engine is a very
pretty woman of about twenty-five, dressed in Army skirt and
matching jacket. This is Lieutenant Robin Mirian Ladd.
INT. KNIGHT 2000
as it passes the car.
MICHAEL
Wait -- let's go back.
K.I.T.T.
Our orders were to meet Devon in
Santa Clara.
MICHAEL
We will. But first...we have to do
a service for our country.
K.I.T.T.
(dubious)
Uh-huh. Would you like to take over
the wheel, now? Perhaps impress the
young lady with my derring-do?
MICHAEL
Just pull over.
BY DISABLED CAR
The Knight 2000 pulls to a stop and Michael climbs out.
Robin looks up from the car. On closer inspection, she is
even prettier, though irritated.
MICHAEL
Hi -- Michael Knight.
They start to shake hands. Hers is full of grease. They
laugh and put their hands down.
ROBIN
Robin Ladd. And aggravated.
MICHAEL
What's the matter?
ROBIN
I'm not sure -- the temperature
gauge went crazy, then the car
over-heated and stalled. I can't
get it started.
Michael checks something. But he's not really sure what to
check on, either.
ROBIN
I haven't been home in two years --
and now I've been stuck here for two
hours!
MICHAEL
I'll be right back.
He heads back to the 2000.
INT. 2000
When Robin looks back down at the engine:
MICHAEL
Any ideas on what could be wrong
with it?
K.I.T.T.
Besides the fact that it is an
inferior machine?
MICHAEL
Don't be chauvanistic.
K.I.T.T.
It's probably the thermostat.
MICHAEL
What are the chances of fixing it
out here?
K.I.T.T.
If you were Bonnie, I'd say 100
percent. As it is....
MICHAEL
All right...we'll have to tow it.
He starts to get back out. Before he can:
K.I.T.T.
Michael!
Michael shuts the door quickly. Robin looks up only for a
second.
K.I.T.T.
I must have heard wrong. Did you
say 'tow?'
MICHAEL
Sure, tow. You know, we connect her
car onto....
K.I.T.T.
Me? Michael, I was not designed to
be a...tow truck. I have numerous
fragile instruments which could be
severely ---
He gets out of the car.
K.I.T.T.
Michael!
EXT. TOWN - DAY
The town is a shabby collection of motels, bars, coffee
shops and small businesses. The Knight 2000 comes into
view, slowing towing the rent-a-car.
INT. KNIGHT 2000 - DAY
Michael and Robin are much more relaxed with one another.
ROBIN
As soon as we got off the plane, we
ran to find hot dogs and French
fries. Germany was a wonderful
country, but try finding a decent
hot dog!
MICHAEL
There's nothing like home cooking.
ROBIN
There's nothing like the States.
(a beat)
What brings you to our neck of the
desert?
MICHAEL
I'm on my way home, too. I just
finished...a matter for a client.
ROBIN
What kind of work are you in --
insurance?
MICHAEL
Something like that.
(changing
the subject)
What time is your father expecting
you?
ROBIN
What week is more like it. He
thinks I'm coming in next week. But
I want to walk into his office and
say...
(deep voice)
'Colonel Ladd, sir?' And have him
look up -- Boy, will he be
surprised! Would you mind if we
went straight to the post? We can
drop the rent-a-car off later.
MICHAEL
A little anxious?
ROBIN
A lot anxious!
A sign at the main gate of the post reads "CAMP ENGLEHART
MUNITIONS PROVING GROUNDS". Like many of the larger Army
posts, it is "open", and Michael can drive right on.
EXT. HEADQUARTERS BUILDING
An impressive, red-bricked building. Robin practically skips
up the walk in anticipation. Michael hurries to stay abreast
of her.
ROBIN
Look at this place -- why does home
always look...smaller?
MICHAEL
Maybe 'cause our memories are so big?
OMITTED
EXT. COLONEL LADD'S OFFICE - DAY
Robin starts to say something to Michael, but he just smiles,
steps back -- allowing her to enter alone.
INT. COLONEL LADD'S OFFICE - DAY
Robin enters with a big smile.
ROBIN
(deep voice)
Colonel Ladd?
When Major Doug Sanderson, a rugged-looking man in his early
fifties, looks up from the desk, he is no less surprised
than Robin.
ROBIN
Isn't this Colonel Ladd's office?
Sanderson gets up from the desk quickly.
SANDERSON
You must be Lieutenant Ladd. I'm
Major Sanderson, Colonel Ladd's
second-in-command.
ROBIN
Where's Daddy?
Sanderson looks extremely ill-at-ease. Michael comes into
the room behind Robin.
SANDERSON
Perhaps we'd better speak to General
Duncton.
INT. GENERAL DUNCTON'S OFFICE - DAY
General Frederick Duncton, a distinguished-looking man in
his sixties, smiles tightly as he gets up from his desk to
greet Robin and Michael.
DUNCTON
Robin -- it's good to see you!
She gives him a kiss on the cheek. Duncton puts his arm
around her.
ROBIN
General Duncton, what's going on?
Where's my father?
Duncton's smile fades.
DUNCTON
You don't know?
ROBIN
Know what?
DUNCTON
Robin, my dear -- I'm afraid there's
been an accident.
Robin tenses.
DUNCTON
I'm sorry. His Jeep went into Buena
Vista gorge out in the desert. He
probably blacked out before...he,
uh...felt anything....
Robin sways. Michael steps over quickly, helps support her.
ROBIN
Oh, no...Daddy...oh, no....
As Michael's arms go around her helplessly, we:
CUT TO
EXT. GRAVESITE - DAY
In the middle of two rows of mourners is an open grave and a
casket -- which has an American flag draped over it. A band
and a line of mourners stand on one side of the grave. Near
the band is Robin, Michael, General Duncton and Major
Sanderson. Not far away is Sgt. Perkins. General Duncton
has his arm linked through Robin's.
At the edge of the grave is a firing party of seven men. A
Chaplain stands with other mourners and pallbearers on the
other side of the gravesite.
CHAPLAIN
(in mid-eulogy)
Earnest Ladd was the ideal soldier...
a man of war who loved peace most
of all. When you asked him about
the chestful of medals he earned
on the battlefields of Europe, he'd
change the subject...and then he'd
talk for hours about his work on
the Berlin Airlift and the Marshall
Plan. His family and friends will
mourn him, his comrades and his
troops will miss him...and we will
all remember him.
He closes his prayerbook.
OFFICER
Escort, present arms!
The firing party points their rifles to the sky, then
fires...once, then again and then a third time.
OFFICER
Order arms!
The firing party lowers their rifles. The bugler in the
band plays "Taps."
When "Taps" is finished, one of the pallbearers takes the
flag off the casket and quickly folds it until it's down to
a cocked hat triangle. He then passes it to the pallbearer
at the head of the grave and salutes the flag. This
pallbearer turns left and hands the flag to Robin.
CUT TO
EDGE OF CEMETARY
Michael waits for Robin, who is slowly making her way down
from the gravesite. Near Michael stands Sanderson and a few
other officers. Sgt. Perkins hovers nearby, obviously
trying to listen in on Sanderson's conversation.
Robin stops by Sanderson and listens to him.
SANDERSON
...It's not something we want to
advertise, but some men did testify
that he had been drinking the night
before. I guess he just misjudged
the....
Robin, barely controlling her anger, strides up to Sanderson.
ROBIN
With all due respect, Major Sanderson,
my father rarely got drunk.
Sanderson looks regretful.
SANDERSON
Lieutenant, I know how you feel.
But the medical tests on the body
were ---
She winces. Turns and walks away. Michael grabs Sanderson's
shoulder, spins him around.
MICHAEL
You're a tactful jackass, you know
that?
SANDERSON
Take your hands off of me!
General Duncton steps over, separates the two men.
DUNCTON
Sanderson, don't you have some
duties to take care of?
Sanderson glares at Michael.
SANDERSON
Yes sir. I do.
He salutes, exits.
MICHAEL
General, I can explain ---
DUNCTON
You don't have to. Sanderson's a
good officer -- but he doesn't have
much of a bedside manner.
Michael turns, looks off at Robin, who is some distance
away, daubing her eyes with a handkerchief.
DUNCTON
Look, Mr. uh ---
MICHAEL
Knight.
DUNCTON
...Knight. I haven't seen Robin since
she was twelve years old. Now, I
don't know how to talk to her...what
to say...You said something about just
passing through. Can your plans....
MICHAEL
...be changed? I think so.
Duncton smiles, shakes Michael's hand.
DUNCTON
Good.
Michael turns, goes to Robin.
MICHAEL AND ROBIN - DAY - TRACKING SHOT
MICHAEL
Robin!
She looks back, but does not slow down. When he is next to
her:
ROBIN
I'd like to be alone right now.
MICHAEL
I understand.
She wheels on him, shouting:
ROBIN
I don't need your sympathy! I don't
need anyone's sympathy!
She turns and runs up a cobblestone path leading to an
officer's duplex, leaving Michael staring after her.
CUT TO
EXT. PATTON MOTEL - RIGHT OFF THE HIGHWAY - DAY
The Knight 2000 is in the parking lot of this ND motel, the
kind that springs up around Army posts like so many cacti.
Michael comes out of a room, gets in the car and gets his
overnight bag.
K.I.T.T.
Michael, I'm afraid I have some
alarming news.
MICHAEL
I'm sitting down.
K.I.T.T.
I've checked my circuits and due to
that towing incident my saline con-
verter is out of alignment.
MICHAEL
I'm sorry...but I don't think we're
going to be underwater in the next
few minutes, so what's the big deal?
K.I.T.T.
Michael...what if it was your saline
converter?
MICHAEL
Okay, okay. Make the call.
EXT. MODEST RESIDENTIAL STREET - ON FOUNDATION'S SEMI - DAY
DEVON'S VOICE
Michael, hello. I was just thinking
of you.
INTERCUT - INT. SEMI - DAY
Devon is on the phone. Bonnie is busy in the f.g., putting
an electronic device together.
MICHAEL
Really? Meaning there's a little
problem that needs my attention?
DEVON
You might say that...it's a small
legal matter which our attorneys
can't quite handle....
Saying this, Devon looks out the window (or door) at ---
EXT. SEMI - DEVON'S POINT OF VIEW - A MODEST BUNGALOW
Two wimpy-looking lawyers are in the front yard, standing
before Mt. Baldy with a moustache -- namely, one Clay
Feltzer. As we watch, one lawyer hands Feltzer a legal form
on a clipboard. The other lawyer kindly presents a pen.
Feltzer snaps the pen in two...rips the form -- and the clip-
board -- in half. He throws one lawyer at the other, slams
his front door.
BACK TO SCENE
DEVON
Dare I say it's quite apropos to your
modus operandi.
MICHAEL
Could you rephrase that?
DEVON
It's right up your alley.
MICHAEL
I've got a problem, too. It's Kitt.
He says his saline converter is out
of whack.
Overhearing this, Bonnie hits a button on a speakerphone,
leans close to it.
BONNIE
That's impossible. The only way you
could damage that converter is to do
something stupid like...like...
(thinking)
...towing another car.
MICHAEL
Well, uh...maybe it's a factory defect
or something. Anyway, you know Kitt
...he likes to be in tip-top shape.
DEVON
Well, when you get here, Miss Barstow
will take a look at it.
MICHAEL
Well...actually, I was hoping you
could meet us.
BONNIE
I don't make house calls.
MICHAEL
I'm about two hours south of you...
at Camp Englehart. And something's
come up here...something urgent....
BONNIE
What's her name?
DEVON
(covering
receiver)
Bonnie, really...Michael may be
cavalier, but 'something urgent'
doesn't always mean....
Bonnie looks at him.
DEVON
It doesn't usually....
Another look from Bonnie.
DEVON
...it doesn't invariably...
(into phone)
What's her name, Michael?
MICHAEL
Devon, I'm surprised at you. This
happens to be a pressing problem
regarding an officer in the Armed
Forces of this great nation.
Devon and Bonnie react to a "thud" against the side of the
semi. A beat later, the two lawyers stumble in the door,
their clothes torn and dirty.
DEVON
Very well, Michael. We'll meet you
there...but wrap up your 'government
matter'....
Devon watches as one lawyer takes ice from Devon's ice bucket,
applies it to a black eye.
DEVON
I want you on this case as soon as
possible.
MICHAEL
Roger, Devon. Over and out.
DEVON
(to Bonnie,
as he hangs up)
He knows I hate that kind of talk.
Michael switches off his car phone.
K.I.T.T.
Michael, how can you tell such out-
rageous lies?
MICHAEL
With a sincere expression.
He starts to get out...thinks about it. Puts his bag back
...starts the car.
OMITTED
EXT. HIGHWAY - NIGHT - DRIVEBY
Michael drives down this empty highway, heading from the
post.
INT. KNIGHT 2000 - NIGHT
In Michael's rearview mirror, he can see an Army-issued
olive-green car, coming up behind him. It is being driven
very erratically.
K.I.T.T.
Shall I take evasive action?
MICHAEL
I'll handle it.
EXT. HIGHWAY - NIGHT
The Knight 2000 swerves to avoid being hit.
INT. KNIGHT 2000 - NIGHT
As the car passes, Michael sees its driver, Robin Ladd.
Michael accelerates and follows her.
BY THE CLIFF - NIGHT
Robin's and Michael's cars stop near the edge of the cliff.
Robin gets out of her car and heads to cliff's edge. Michael
follows. She looks at him coldly; she's been crying.
ROBIN
I told you -- I don't need your
sympathy.
MICHAEL
Then how about my help?
ROBIN
Why should you care?
MICHAEL
Because...that's the kind of insur-
ance my company sells.
She looks at him closely, then turns and stares out across
the desert beyond.
ROBIN
When I was a little girl and Mom was
alive, we'd come up here for picnics
every Sunday. Dad always drove out
here -- to relax. He loved this
desert. Some people are mountain
people. Some love the ocean. Dad
was a desert person.
(a pause)
When I was at West Point, he'd send
me things. I mean, not like the
other cadets -- they got cookies and
cakes, stuff like that. I got
articles -- and books -- on famous
generals and women: Patton, Eleanor
Roosevelt. He wanted me to be the
first female four-star general.
She turns to him, shaking.
ROBIN
...There's so much...I didn't get to
tell him.
Michael comes up, envelopes her in his arms.
ROBIN
He knew this road so well. How
could he have died like that?
MICHAEL
I don't know. What do you think
happened?
ROBIN
(shakes
her head)
All I know is something...isn't right
here....
MICHAEL
Then let's check into it.
ROBIN
How?
MICHAEL
I can check the medical report, the
accident report...you never know
what you might find.
She calms down.
ROBIN
I could...check Daddy's files.
MICHAEL
Good.
She steps back.
ROBIN
You do believe me, don't you? I
mean, I'm not hysterical. Well,
maybe a little -- but you do believe
me?
MICHAEL
I believe you.
She finally manages to smile.
EXT. MUNITIONS BUILDING - DUSK
Sgt. Perkins is talking with Mank and Cotler. Mank is
agitated.
MANK
She wasn't supposed to have come in
until next week -- when the Ordinance
tests were over.
COTLER
And who's that guy, Knight? He was
'just passing through' -- now he's
hanging around.
PERKINS
Just keep an eye on them...both of
them.
The camera tightens on Perkins.
PERKINS
(continuing)
And let's hope we don't need another
military funeral.

EXT. PX PARKING LOT - DAY
Army personnel stream in and out of the PX. Parked in the
lot are various cars, Army vehicles, a catering truck --
whose Vendor doles out plastic-coated sandwiches and plastic-
tasting coffee -- and the Knight 2000.
INT. KNIGHT 2000
Sipping coffee, Michael is looking at ---
MICHAEL'S POINT OF VIEW - MEDICAL BUILDING
A door labeled "Medical Records" is guarded by an MP. He
checks everyone entering.
BACK TO SCENE
MICHAEL
Kitt, we have to get that medical
report.
K.I.T.T.
'We', Michael? I think I would
attract a great deal of attention
inside that building.
MICHAEL
Unfortunately, so would I...unless....
Michael stops. He's noticed the activity at the catering
truck behind him.
K.I.T.T.
Michael, I detect a certain tone in
your voice.
MICHAEL
Oh? What tone is that?
K.I.T.T.
The one where you're convinced
you've come up with a brilliant
idea. The next thing you know,
you're doing something foolhardy and
I'm in my surveillance mode.
MICHAEL
Kitt?
K.I.T.T.
Yes, Michael?
MICHAEL
Go into surveillance mode.
Michael gets out of the car. Some interesting lights blink
on.
OMITTED
BY CATERING TRUCK
When the crowd thins out, Michael approaches the Vendor.
MICHAEL
May I have another cup of coffee?
The Vendor nods wearily. He starts to the coffee machine.
Steaming hot coffee is brewing.
MICHAEL
In fact, may I have all your cups of
coffee?
The Vendor turns back to see if this guy's crazy or what.
Michael pulls out his wallet full of Foundation money.
VENDOR
Listen, mac, I run a business
here....
MICHAEL
For an hour -- max.
VENDOR
I gotta sell my sandwiches....
MICHAEL
I'll buy them, too.
VENDOR
And...and...my chips and pretzels.
Michael nods, counts out some money. The Vendor's eyes
light up.
MICHAEL
And, if anyone asks, I'm your nephew.
VENDOR
For another twenty dollars, I'll
adopt you.
EXT. MEDICAL RECORDS BUILDING - DAY
Michael drives up in the Vendor's truck. He parks and gets
out. He takes a small basket from the front seat and loads
it with sodas, candy, etc. and enters the Medical Records
Building. The guard at the door just waves him in.
EXT. PX - DAY
A garbage truck is sandwiched up against the Knight 2000.
Lanky PFC Kosko is driving the truck, attempting to maneuver
it without hitting the Knight 2000. Pudgy PFC Weiss is
standing alongside shouting directions.
WEISS
(calling)
You're too close to the car, Kosko!
KOSKO
(calling back
sarcastically)
I can see that much, Weiss!
KOSKO'S POINT OF VIEW - ROBIN
looking sharp, hurries past the truck on her way to the
Inspector General's office. Kosko stares.
KOSKO
Wow -- that's my kind of officer!
CLOSE ON KOSKO'S HAND
Instead of reaching for the gearshift, he grabs the lever
labeled "garbage dump." When he hits it....
EXT. TRUCK
The garbage holder lifts -- and then all the garbage spills
out of the truck -- towards the Knight 2000.
INT. K.I.T.T.
One of the dashboard scanners looms in on the approaching
garbage. The dashboard lights up.
WEISS
sees the imminent spill, runs towards Kosko.
WEISS
Kosko! Wake up...!
K.I.T.T.
backs up deftly and goes around a corner...just as the
garbage tumbles down.
THE SCENE
When Weiss opens his eyes -- there is a giant pile of
garbage where the car used to be. Kosko hops out.
KOSKO
Where's that civilian car?
WEISS
(points
to pile)
Under that, you idiot!
KOSKO
Oh, geez...when this gets out we'll
be transferred to the South Pole!
WEISS
Get some shovels from the truck...
Maybe we can get that car outta here
before anybody knows what happened.
Kosko goes to the truck and gets two shovels. And they
start to shovel....
EXT. COLONEL LADD'S OFFICE - DAY
Robin quickly opens the door to the darkened office. She
checks the hallway -- sees no one -- and goes inside.
INT. MEDICAL RECORDS BUILDING - DAY
Michael is selling goodies out of his basket in the front
hall. He is checking out the hallway and rooms, not really
paying much attention to the fat GI who is buying up almost
everything in the basket.
SOLDIER
Where's Sanj?
MICHAEL
Sanj? Is that Indian?
SOLDIER
Nah -- the sandwich man. Where's
the sandwich man?
MICHAEL
Oh -- he's on vacation. Sandwich
Islands.
The Soldier holds up a can of soda.
SOLDIER
How much?
MICHAEL
(not sure)
Uh...forty-five cents.
SOLDIER
Forty-five! Sanj usually charges
thirty-five!
MICHAEL
Inflation.
INT. OFFICE - DAY
Robin is searching the office. She opens the desk drawer,
then something on the desk catches her eye. She picks up
the nameplate that reads: "COL. ERNEST T. LADD". After a
moment, she puts the nameplate back on the desk and turns to
a wall of file cabinets. She crosses to one at the far left
end...when she hears a sound from the hallway. She freezes,
ducks behind the desk.
INT. MEDICAL RECORDS BUILDING
Michael is in a small closet talking into his wrist radio.
MICHAEL
Kitt, I need a status check.
INTERCUT - K.I.T.T.
On his monitor screen is a plan of the building. A blinking
light indicates Michael.
K.I.T.T.
Certainly, Michael. You are in a
broom closet.
MICHAEL
I know that! The records room is
twenty five feet from here. Is
anyone inside it?
EXT. CLOSET
A custodian stands outside the closet. Hearing voices, the
custodian peers inside the keyhole.
CUSTODIAN'S POINT OF VIEW - MICHAEL
is talking into his wrist -- and his wrist is talking back.
K.I.T.T.
No, Michael. It's all clear.
MICHAEL
Thanks, Kitt.
Michael comes out of the closet -- sees the custodian.
Michael smiles sheepishly, walks away.
INT. COLONEL LADD'S OFFICE - DAY
A shadow moves past the door window. After a second, Robin
gets up and opens another file cabinet. One file catches
her eye. She opens it, looks at a piece of paper, then
sticks the paper in her pocket.
INT. HALLWAY TO FILE ROOM - DAY
Michael strolls past the room which is clearly marked,
"CLASSIFIED". He checks each way -- then hurries inside.
INT. FILE ROOM - DAY
He goes to a file drawer and opens it. He pulls out a file
marked "LADD-ERNEST T." He glances through it.
INT. HALLWAY TO FILE ROOM - DAY
Through the door window of this room, a nurse walks past the
room -- then goes back and looks inside. What she sees is
Michael. The nurse hurries away.
INT. LADD'S OFFICE
Robin is at another file drawer. She opens a file -- and is
surprised at the empty file labelled "MUNITIONS". Robin
contemplates this when Sanderson walks in and flicks on the
light. She looks up, startled.
SANDERSON
Lieutenant Ladd...Hi! I didn't
expect you back so soon....
She calms herself.
ROBIN
Well, work...always helps keep my
mind...off things.
SANDERSON
I can understand that. Is there
something you were looking for?
ROBIN
Just...pictures or anything my
father may have left.
SANDERSON
Did you find anything?
She picks up the nameplate.
ROBIN
Just this.
He smiles.
SANDERSON
Actually, this is a stroke of good
luck. I have a job for you that
will keep you very busy, indeed.
Come with me.
She carries the nameplate and exits. He looks around the
room, shuts off the light and closes the door behind him.
EXT. FILE OFFICE
The clerk points to the door to two MPs.
OFFICE
As Michael, with his basket, walks out, the MPs come in.
After a beat:
MICHAEL
(holding
up candy)
Ah...You two look like you might
want a quick pick me up.
They grab his elbows, actually lift and carry him.
MICHAEL
I'm sorry I said that....
CUT TO
EXT. STOCKADE - DAY - TO ESTABLISH
INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - DAY
Michael sits at a table, across from a friendly looking,
bear-like man, Lieutenant Hugh Rainey. At the door stands
an MP.
RAINEY
What exactly were you looking for,
Mr. Knight?
MICHAEL
Don't tell Uncle Sanj -- but I was
looking for a place to -- catch a
few z's. That's no crime, is it
Lieutenant?
RAINEY
In a classified area, yes.
(a beat)
We ran a check and we find no record
of you anywhere.
MICHAEL
You know how it is -- when you live
a clean life, no one bothers? I
mean, the FBI only keeps finger-
prints on crooks, right? I was
always taught -- do right -- believe
in justice. That way, you won't get
in trouble.
Rainey nods yes.
RAINEY
Then could you explain the cards of
paper in your wallet?
MICHAEL
Cards?
RAINEY
(reads them)
'Michael Knight -- Speedy Repairman',
'Michael Knight -- Quick Carpet
Cleaner', 'M. Knight, Enterprises -
Swedish massage, While-U-Wait'.
MICHAEL
Lieutenant, times are rough. I've
had to do a lot of odd jobs -- just
to make ends meet. That's why I was
so lucky Uncle Sanj gave me this job.
RAINEY
Uncle Sanj? Even his family calls
him that?
MICHAEL
Sure. We're a tight-knit group.
Indian, you know.
INT. QUARTERMASTER'S WAREHOUSE - DAY
It is a vast cavern, full of stores of uniforms, canned
goods, etc. As Sanderson points things out to Robin, his
voice echoes.
SANDERSON
You see, Lieutenant Ladd, this
material hasn't been inventoried
in close to ten years.
She lifts up a moldy parka. Moths fly out.
ROBIN
It looks more like twenty-five.
SANDERSON
All the more reason to get the
report in as quickly as possible.
ROBIN
But -- couldn't any private do this
job?
SANDERSON
Hardly, Lieutenant -- I don't have
to tell you how important this task
is -- what with our new concern with
Arctic warfare. I know it's a big job
-- but it will keep you very
busy.
When he smiles, she does her best to smile back.
INT. INTERROGATION ROOM
RAINEY
All right, Mr. Knight. Your Uncle
Sanj verifies your story. Next time
you want to catch a snooze -- find a
nonclassified area, okay?
Michael smiles, relieved.
MICHAEL
Okay.
He reaches down into his basket. He hands Rainey a candy
bar.
MICHAEL
Candy bar -- on the house.
Rainey smiles, takes the bar.
EXT. POST STREET - DAY
Perkins watches as Michael comes out of the MP building.
When Michael is gone, Perkins walks briskly to the building.
Major Rainey is coming out.
PERKINS
Sir, see that civilian...What was he
here for?
RAINEY
Nothing, much. He was caught cat-
napping in the Medical Records
building. No harm done. Why?
PERKINS
Uh, no reason, sir. I thought I
served with him in Korea.
Perkins turns, hurries away.
WITH MICHAEL
He looks around for his car, puzzled. Then he sees it,
crosses to it, gets in.
MICHAEL
(sotto)
Can't you stay in one place?
He gets in. Drives away. We pan with him, hold when we see
Kosko and Weiss...digging away at the mountain of garbage.
EXT. PATTON MOTEL - NIGHT
as Michael pulls up, parks.
K.I.T.T.
Michael?
MICHAEL
Yes, Kitt?
K.I.T.T.
I detect someone inside your room.
MICHAEL
What?
K.I.T.T.
Could it possibly be someone from
room service?
MICHAEL
Not in this place....
He crosses carefully to his room. Feels the knob.
Unlocked. Stepping back, he kicks the door open ---
INT. MOTEL ROOM (SECTION) - NIGHT
As the door crashes open, Robin jumps off the bed, with a
shriek. The newspaper she's been reading goes flying.
ROBIN
(recovering)
Do you always enter a room like that?
As Michael reacts we:

INT. MUNITIONS WAREHOUSE - NIGHT
Cotler and Mank are playing cards. Perkins comes into the
shot on the double.
PERKINS
I got a job for you two. Lieutenant
Ladd's civilian was snooping around
the post.
MANK
(pleased,
rising)
Maybe it's time for that other
funeral.
PERKINS
(sharp)
We don't need any heat -- not now.
(beat,
smiling)
But a trip for two to the emergency
room...I think we could all live
with that.
Mank and Cotler smile, move away.

EXT. TOWN STREET - NIGHT
A typical Army town -- too much neon, too much noise -- too
little taste. Michael and Robin come out of a very greasy
spoon. Michael gingerly touches his stomach.
MICHAEL
Well, that was certainly...food.
ROBIN
Not everybody likes junk.
MICHAEL
I do. This was just...beyond junk.
You ready to compare notes?
ROBIN
If one note counts, yes.
She hands him the paper she pilfered from the file.
MICHAEL
According to this, your father was
granted a leave over a week ago.
Yet, he came back to the post...Why?
ROBIN
I don't know. Your turn.
MICHAEL
Was your father a handyman-type?
You know, do it yourself?
ROBIN
(smiling)
No way. He had to call the
Quartermaster to change a light
bulb. Why?
MICHAEL
The medical report I saw said he had
blue paint on his hands.
ROBIN
(puzzled)
Blue paint?
She looks at him doubtfully. When they reach an alleyway,
Robin turns down it. Michael hesitates.
ROBIN
Come on -- it's a short cut we
always used as kids....
He follows.
EXT. STREET - NEW ANGLE
on Mank and Cotler, out of uniform, in grubbies. They watch
Robin and Michael. They each take a knife out of their
pocket.
ALLEY - NIGHT
which is filled with garbage cans, trash -- and one derelict.
ROBIN
And then there was that empty
munitions file.
MICHAEL
Munitions, huh? Where is the
munitions area...?
She thinks -- then looks up:
ROBIN
Not far from Buena Vista Gorge....
MICHAEL
Where your father crashed.
Before they can figure this out, Robin sees Mank coming down
the alley towards them, from the north end of the alley.
They turn around -- and see Cotler coming at them from the
south end. They are trapped, and we:
FADE TO BLACK
END OF ACT TWO
ACT THREE
FADE IN
ALLEYWAY - NIGHT
Mank and Cotler close in from either side.
MANK
Hey, man, how about some money?
Michael and Robin huddle close. Mank reaches them first.
Michael steps in front of Robin as if to protect her. She
gives him a look, then steps in front of him.
In the blink of an eye, she has issued a perfect karate kick
to Mank's hand, sending the knife flying and Mank sprawling.
Cotler charges Michael.
Michael grabs him, introduces him to the nearby brick wall.
Mank tries to fend off Robin's kicks, then he rolls under
her and she falls.
Cotler, on the ground, snatches up the dropped knife, attacks
Michael. Michael grabs a garbage can lid. Presto-instant
shield.
The derelict looks up. He sees a man with a garbage can
shield and a woman holding her own against a big man. He
shakily gets to his feet.
Mank spies a half-broken beer bottle and tries to grab it.
Michael -- still fending off Cotler's knife attacks -- sees
this and he kicks the bottle away.
Cotler, passing Robin, takes a swipe at her with the knife.
It grazes her arm. Mank scrambles to his feet.
Michael takes the can lid and whacks Cotler with it. Cotler
goes down.
The derelict stumbles in the middle of the fight, totally
oblivious.
Robin, on her feet, gives both Mank and Cotler karate kicks.
Mank stumbles back and falls, rearend first, into a garbage
can. Cotler runs/crawls out towards the north end of the
alley.
The derelict checks the garbage can with Mank in it. He
decides the pickings are much too sparse and walks on.
When Mank comes to, he runs down the alley. Michael and
Robin catch their breath.
ROBIN
You...did...okay...for a civilian.
MICHAEL
Thanks, Rocky.
ROBIN
Next time I offer a short cut,
ignore me.
MICHAEL
It's not just the neighborhood.
(off her
look)
Did you notice that one guy's shoes?
ROBIN
Shoes?

EXT. GENERAL DUNCTON'S OFFICE - DAY
DUNCTON'S VOICE
This is shocking, Robin. Just
shocking.
INT. GENERAL DUNCTON'S OFFICE - DAY
Duncton hands Michael and Robin coffee while he shakes his
head.
DUNCTON
Even an Army town isn't safe anymore.
Damn civilian hoodlums think it's
open season on soldiers....
MICHAEL
Sir -- one of the men was wearing
Army issue boots.
DUNCTON
Probably one of those town punks.
They love to buy their clothes at
the Army-Navy store. Don't have
guts enough to join up and get
them the right way....
He leads them to chairs. They all sit.
ROBIN
General Duncton, do you know that my
father was granted a leave a couple
weeks back?
DUNCTON
Of course. I urged him to take it.
He worked very hard, Robin.
ROBIN
But he died on the post.
MICHAEL
He must have come back for a reason.
DUNCTON
Hmmm. You're right...
(thinking)
He came back to see if Robin had
arrived! Right?
MICHAEL
(it's plausable)
Well....
This logical explanation unnerves Robin and Michael.
ROBIN
(getting
desperate)
But the file -- the munitions file,
in his office was empty.
DUNCTON
I know that, dear. Your father had
just completed a lengthy report for
me on munitions control. I have the
file. Would you like to see it?
Robin looks at Michael helplessly. The look on his face
says that they'd better quit while they are ahead.
MICHAEL
Thanks for your time, General. I
think we'd better get some rest.
They all stand.
DUNCTON
That's a very sound idea, Mr. Knight.
(to Robin)
You take care.
Robin nods. Duncton watches them as they leave, concerned.
MICHAEL AND ROBIN
walk back to her quarters.
MICHAEL
I didn't have the nerve to tell him
about the paint. I think he
would've locked us both up.
ROBIN
And thrown away the key. Maybe with
good reason....
They reach the building marked, "Bachelor Officer's
Quarters."
MICHAEL
Funny, I never thought I'd stay up
all night with a bachelor....
An o.s. honk attracts Michael's attention. He looks up,
sees ---
HIS POINT OF VIEW - FOUNDATION SEMI
parked on the main drag. Bonnie is behind the wheel.
BACK TO SCENE
MICHAEL
(to Robin)
Uh...why don't you get a good day's
sleep. We'll do some brainstorming
later.
ROBIN
Sure.
She suddenly pulls him close, kisses him on the cheek.
ROBIN
Thanks for everything.
She goes inside the building. Michael smiles...and then
sees ---
HIS POINT OF VIEW - BONNIE
leaning on the dash of the truck, a knowing look on her face.
BACK TO SCENE
Michael reacts, crosses to semi, enters the side door.
INT. SEMI - DAY
Michael comes in the side door, nods to Devon.
MICHAEL
Hello, Devon ---
Michael stops, surprised to see K.I.T.T. parked here.
MICHAEL
(to K.I.T.T.)
Aren't you supposed to wait
faithfully for my return or
something?
DEVON
Really, Michael, you've read too
many Western novels.
Bonnie comes in from the front.
BONNIE
The saline converter is back in
operation, Michael.
MICHAEL
(to K.I.T.T.)
I'm so happy for you.
K.I.T.T.
Thank you.
(sotto)
To save you embarrassment, I didn't
describe the origin of the damage.
MICHAEL
Kitt, you're one in a million.
K.I.T.T.
I know.
Bonnie crosses to the car. It's a tight squeeze past
Michael.
BONNIE
Excuse me.
MICHAEL
Anytime.
She gets in K.I.T.T., starts checking circuits. Devon leads
Michael to a seat.
DEVON
Michael, the Foundation has worked
months on this union racketeering
case. Without Mr. Feltzer's
testimony it will all be for
naught. I trust you've tidied up
your urgent government case...?
MICHAEL
Not exactly. But I think I can get
to the bottom of it tonight.
Bonnie looks up from her work.
BONNIE
(sweetly)
I'll bet.
Michael throws her a look.
DEVON
Michael, this wild goose chase has
gone on long enough!
MICHAEL
I can't leave yet. But I will offer
a compromise....
DEVON
Of all the bull-headed, stubborn men
I've ever met...If Mr. Knight were
alive today....
MICHAEL
You'd be calling him bull-headed and
stubborn....
Devon sighs. Michael's right.
DEVON
I'm listening.
MICHAEL
Why don't you talk to Mr. Feltzer?
DEVON
What?!
MICHAEL
Sure -- you're the best talker in
the organization.
DEVON
That's impossible...
(hedging)
Isn't it?
K.I.T.T.
Mathematically speaking, sir, it's
far from impossible. In fact....
BONNIE
(warning)
Kitt....
MICHAEL
Go up to him and tell him how
important this case is. Talk to him
man to man.
DEVON
Or man to brute.
MICHAEL
Is that fear I detect, Devon?
DEVON
Certainly not...merely...caution.
Devon is thinking.
DEVON
Very well. I'll give it a try.
MICHAEL
Good! I'm proud of you, Devon, I
really am.
DEVON
On one condition.
MICHAEL
Name it.
DEVON
You never again tell me that you are
proud of me!

QUARTERMASTER'S WAREHOUSE - NIGHT
Hold on the racks of gear. Then we see Robin and Michael
are sneaking around the uniform area. Michael holds a
flashlight.
ROBIN
I just knew this rotten job would
come in handy someday.
(a beat)
Any preference? Enlisted man?
Officer? WAC?
MICHAEL
How about something in basic stealthy?
ROBIN
Got it.
She pulls out some fatigues and hands them to him.
ROBIN
Are you sure you don't want me to
come with you?
MICHAEL
I'd love you to. But the one thing
they can't do is give me a court
martial.
ROBIN
You be very careful.
MICHAEL
I will.
There's a nervous second...the closeness of the room...the
closeness of their bodies....
ROBIN
Thanks.
MICHAEL
Thanks -- for what?
ROBIN
For -- believing in me.
MICHAEL
I don't...I just wanted to wear this
nifty uniform....
She laughs.
INT. KNIGHT 2000 - NIGHT
Michael climbs in.
K.I.T.T.
Michael, don't you take enough risks?
I mean, they do have penalties for
impersonating officers, don't they?
MICHAEL
You forget, Kitt -- I am an officer
-- in the Reserves. As Michael Long.
K.I.T.T.
Just don't ask me to impersonate a
Jeep.
EXT. MUNITIONS AREA - NIGHT
Michael pulls the car off the road not far from where
Col. Ladd did before. He gets out of the car and runs
towards the fence. Michael sees Mank and Cotler by the light
and starts to climb over. At the top, he throws his fatigue
shirt over the barbed wire. He drops to the ground with a
thud.
MANK AND COTLER
hear the thud. They rush to the back.
EXT. PX - WEISS AND KOSKO
nearing the bottom of the garbage pile. They are bewildered.
WEISS
It's gotta be here somewhere!
KOSKO
Keep looking!
EXT. QUARTERMASTER'S - NIGHT
Robin looks up. An MP car drives up. Perkins climbs out.
PERKINS
Do you have authorization to be in
there, Lieutenant?
She's trapped. He roughly pushes her to the car. When she
gets in, she sees....
INT. CAR
Sanderson in the backseat.
WEISS AND KOSKO
watch as Robin is put in the car. Perkins gets in and
drives the car away.
MICHAEL
climbs in the window of the Munitions Building. Using the
flashlight, he starts to explore.
EXT. MUNITIONS BUILDING
Mank and Cotler come around -- but no one is by the fence.
They shrug, go back to the front.
MICHAEL
sees the crates and boxes marked "Practice Shells" and
"Armor-Piercing Shells". Then he moves to where the wall
chart is located. He looks up at the color code chart then
the flashlight stops on the open can of blue paint. Above
the paint are four shelves of shells, all painted blue. He
points the beam of light at the color code chart which reads:
"BLUE - ARMOR PIERCING"
Michael takes out his keys and starts to scrape at one of
the blue shells. After a second, the blue chips away -- to
reveal yellow paint. He scrapes some more and sees more
yellow. He points the flashlight up to the chart which
reads:
"YELLOW - NUCLEAR TACTICAL WEAPONS"
As Michael reacts we:

INT. CAR - DAWN
Robin -- in handcuffs -- sits in the backseat with Sanderson.
SANDERSON
You're too much like your father,
Lieutenant. He didn't know when to
keep his eyes closed, either.
ROBIN
(quietly)
You killed him.
SANDERSON
You read the report -- my report.
He drove into the gorge. And now
his only daughter -- crazy with
grief -- went AWOL. Disappeared
without a trace...along with her
civilian friend.
PERKINS
(grimly)
When we find him.
SANDERSON
Of course, that part of the report
remains to be written. I'll try and
get to it next week.
The car comes to a halt.
EXT. HOUSE - NIGHT
Perkins parks the car in front of a house. He pulls Robin
out of the car.
INT. "HOUSE" - NIGHT
Perkins opens the door -- and shoves Robin inside. She
can't keep her balance and she falls to the floor. The
"house" is really just one large, windowless room. Perkins
slams the door shut, pitching the room into darkness.
EXT. HOUSE - NIGHT
Camera pulls back slowly, as the car drives away. We see
now that the "house" is really a false front.
INTERCUT - ARTILLERY IMPLACEMENTS - NIGHT - STOCK

MICHAEL
Yes. Why?
WEISS
Sergeant Perkins drove away with her
-- in an MP car, about an hour ago.
Michael waves and runs to K.I.T.T. When Weiss and Kosko see
Michael's car pull away, they are amazed.
WEISS
Wait -- isn't that....
KOSKO
No...!
WEISS

KOSKO
Yes!!

EXT. POST - DAY
Michael parks K.I.T.T. as he sees Rainey crossing the post.
He runs up to him, grabs him.
MICHAEL
Lieutenant Rainey! Why was Robin
Ladd arrested?
RAINEY
Well, well, the sandwich man....
MICHAEL
Lieutenant, it's important! Why?
RAINEY
I don't know what you're talking
about. Lieutenant Ladd hasn't been
arrested.
MICHAEL
But -- Sergeant Perkins picked her
up in an MP vehicle.
RAINEY
Perkins? Perkins isn't in the
Military Police...he's in munitions.
MICHAEL
(realizing)
Munitions!
(quickly)
I can't explain -- but have some of
your men meet me at munitions --
immediately!
Michael tears away.
KNIGHT 2000
The car takes off like a shot...90 M.P.H...120 M.P.H...150
M.P.H...across the desert roads....
EXT. MUNITIONS - DAY
Sanderson is supervising Perkins, Mank and Cotler. The two
privates carry the blue shells from the munitions building
to a truck.
From o.s., we hear the sounds of artillery fire.
SANDERSON
Let's get a move on. That plane
lands at 0-10-hundred hours.
They look up when they hear an approaching vehicle....
THE KNIGHT 2000
as it tears like a glider across the desert.
MUNITIONS DUMP
As Michael screeches into sight, Perkins, Mank and Cotler
pull out their pistols. Mank fires once, then again....
The bullets bounce off the car harmlessly. Sanderson runs
inside.
The Knight 2000 edges closer to Mank and Cotler. Finally,
in fright, they drop their guns -- and hightail it out of
the munitions area.
Perkins runs to a side door of the building and grabs a door
handle. It's locked. The Knight 2000 is coming straight at
him...He looks back, scared. He drops his gun. The Knight
stops -- on a dime -- inches from Perkins, trapping him
against the building. Michael takes the gun from him then
runs to the building.
MICHAEL
sees and hears nothing. He steps inside. Goes down the
aisles of ammo. Suddenly ---
SANDERSON
throws a crate at him and Michael goes down. Sanderson runs
outside.
Michael shakes off the blow and staggers out.
BY KNIGHT 2000
Sanderson is trying desperately to unlock a door. When he
sees Michael, he pulls out his gun...he takes aim...Michael
is a sitting duck...until K.I.T.T. zooms into shot --
"takes" the bullets.
Before Sanderson can comprehend this, Michael vaults
K.I.T.T.'s hood, grabs Sanderson and smashes him against the
wall.
MICHAEL
Where's Robin Ladd?
SANDERSON
I don't know!
In the b.g., we hear the gunfire of artillery coming from
the Ordinance area.
SANDERSON
You're going to be in big trouble,
Knight. Accosting Army personnel,
destroying government property....
MICHAEL
If we're crazy you're right.
SANDERSON
You are crazy.
MICHAEL
Oh?
He drags Sanderson to the truck.
MICHAEL
Those shells are blue. Then according
to the chart, they must be armor-
piercing shells.
Sanderson is starting to get nervous. With a free hand,
Michael grabs the shell.
MICHAEL
Well, then if this is armor-piercing,
and I open it up, I'll just destroy
the cap mechanism. No harm done.
But if this isn't -- if this is some
of the nuclear tactical weapons you
crooks are trying to sneak off the
base, well, when I unscrew it, there
still won't be an explosion, but
there'll be enough radiation to last
a few hundred thousand half-lifes,
right, Major?
Michael starts to unscrew a blue shell.
SANDERSON
is sweating, getting nervous. Michael keeps going.
SANDERSON
Stop!
MICHAEL
Why? Nothing will happen.
(a beat)
Where is she?!
SANDERSON
She's...at ground zero....
MICHAEL
What the hell are you talking about?
SANDERSON
The Ordinance Weapons center. She's
at Ground Zero.
When this sinks in, Michael drags Sanderson to a cage area
inside the building. He locks him inside. Then he grabs
Perkins and does the same.
KNIGHT 2000
as it speeds up the desert road. It passes Mank and Cotler
running towards the post.
After the Knight 2000 passes and turns off towards the
Ordinance Test Center, a half dozen MP Jeeps appear at the
horizon. When Mank and Cotler see the Jeeps, they give up
trying to escape.
EXT. GUARD BOOTH
The wooden gate is down and a GI steps out. Michael brings
the car to a stop.
GUARD
This is authorized area. The
Ordinance Test Center is closed
during the weapons testing.
MICHAEL
Where's General Duncton?
GUARD
He's at the center. But you can't....
But Michael revs up the Knight 2000 -- and it smashes the
guard gate to splinters. The Guard leaps out of the way to
avoid getting hit.
INT. KNIGHT 2000
O.s. the guns are much louder. When the car comes over a
rise, we can see the house with the bull's-eye -- surrounded
by clouds of smoke and explosions.
MICHAEL
Kitt, can you get the Army frequency?
K.I.T.T.
Which one? Russian...Albanian?
MICHAEL
Duncton. Get Duncton.
K.I.T.T.
(disappointed)
Oh. American.
INTERCUT - DUNCTON'S BUNKER - DAY
The bunker is concrete and has one small slit for a window.
It looks out over the Ordinance Test Center.
Duncton is handed the phone by an Aide.
DUNCTON
Yes, Mr. Knight...You're where?!
INTERCUT - MICHAEL
MICHAEL
Halfway across your target zone.
DUNCTON
Are you out of your mind? You'll
be killed if you ---
MICHAEL
(breaking in)
General, listen! I have proof that
a group of men on the post tried to
steal tactical nuclear weapons.
Sanderson was the ringleader.
DUNCTON
Are you positive of that?!
MICHAEL
Yes, sir. Sanderson locked Robin
Ladd up at Ground Zero. I'm going
to get her out. Can you stop the
tests?
DUNCTON
Stop the tests? Of course, imme-
diately! You're a brave man,
Mr. Knight. Hang on!
He hangs up just as an Aide runs up.
AIDE
Sir, there's a strange black car in
the target zone!
DUNCTON
I know.
Camera tightens on Duncton.
DUNCTON
The black car is part of today's

THE KNIGHT 2000
The ammo bursts all around the car.
MICHAEL
Hey! What's going on?
K.I.T.T.
We are being bombarded by artillery
shells. I thought it was obvious.
MICHAEL
(realizing)
So is something else...I don't think
I should have called out 'buddy'
General Duncton....
Michael swerves to avoid a bomb crater. Explosions are
coming closer to the car.
MICHAEL
Kitt, can you take a direct hit?
Just then, a near hit rattles the car.
K.I.T.T.
I don't think we want to find out.
TANKS - STOCK
come charging over the hill at the Knight 2000. They fire
at the car.
KNIGHT 2000
as it bears to the right, then the left, then zooms out of
range. It is successfully avoiding the tank's fire.
SANJ'S TRUCK
parked beyond a fence at the end of the testing center. On
either side of the fence are deep gulleys. The fat soldier
is getting a soda from Sanj. Behind the Soldier is Kosko.
SANJ
Fifty-five cents.
SOLDIER
Fifty-five? The other guy charged me
forty-five!
SANJ
Inflation.
Weiss calls over to Kosko:
WEISS
Hey -- Kosko -- get here on the double.
We have to get some more shells.
Kosko hurries away.
DUNCTON'S POINT OF VIEW
He can see that the Knight 2000 has gotten past the tank
fire and is starting for the house.
DUNCTON
(to Aide)
Ready the heat-seeking rockets.
ON ARTILLERY HOWITZERS - DAY - STOCK
firing at the car. The Knight 2000 adroitly steers clear of
all the shells.
INT. KNIGHT 2000
MICHAEL
How are we doing, Kitt?
K.I.T.T.
As you might say...'Piece of cake'....
MICHAEL
Don't get cocky....
INT. DUNCTON'S BUNKER
AIDE
The heat-seeking rockets are ready,
sir.
DUNCTON
Train them on the car!
WEISS AND KOSKO
pass a bunch of MP Jeeps carting Perkins, Mank and Cotler
away. They pull into munitions -- and see the truck of blue
shells.
WEISS
(points to them)
Hey, these will do.
They get out of the truck and start to load some of the
shells into their truck.
INT. THE KNIGHT 2000
Michael is looking out of the windshield at an approaching
rocket. The car turns left -- and the rocket follows --
and, in fact, is getting closer. The car zooms right -- but
the rocket stays close.
MICHAEL
Kitt! It's a heat-seeking missile!
Try and dodge it!
K.I.T.T.
I am trying.
MICHAEL
We have to find another source of
heat!
Michael looks around.
MICHAEL'S POINT OF VIEW - EDGE OF FIRING RANGE
Camera zooms to the fence. Just beyond it is Sanj's roach
coach.
MICHAEL'S VOICE
Over there!
EXT. KNIGHT 2000
as it swings around in a desperate turn, heads for the fence.
OMITTED
THE ROCKET
is close to the car.
THE KNIGHT 2000
is going as fast as it can...The car is coming close to a
gully.
FAVORING SANJ
as our fat GI returns with a complaint.
SOLDIER
Hey, this coffee isn't hot.
SANJ
(annoyed)
It isn't? Okay, you want hot? I'll
give you hot!
He turns, raises the thermostat. The needle goes into the
red zone. Suddenly both men turn, seeing ---
KNIGHT 2000
roaring towards them.
SANJ AND CUSTOMERS
turn and head for the hills.
THE KNIGHT 2000
at the last possible second, dives into the gully.
THE ROCKET
goes through the fence to the coffee truck...and...explodes
the truck, sending coffee, Danishes, chips and candy bars
everywhere!
INT. K.I.T.T.
as the car spins around, heads back towards ground zero.
MICHAEL
Terrific, Kitt! It worked!
K.I.T.T.
Michael, are there any more catering
trucks in the vicinity?
MICHAEL
No. Why?
K.I.T.T.
There's two more heat-seeking
missiles coming in from the
Southwest.
Michael turns, looks.
HIS POINT OF VIEW - MISSILES - STOCK
heading toward them.
BACK TO SCENE
Michael looks around.
MICHAEL
Head for that underbrush, Kitt.
EXT. KNIGHT 2000
drives to a thicket of chaparral, sagebrush and mesquite.
INT. KNIGHT 2000
MICHAEL
Fire your rockets!
EXT. CAR
K.I.T.T. does -- and the thicket bursts into flames. The
heat-seeking rockets head for the fire and -- explode on
contact.
THE KNIGHT 2000
It points itself to the house....
EXT. HOUSE - DAY
An artillery barrage hits close to it, collapsing part of
the roof.
INT. HOUSE
Robin barely misses getting smashed by the falling rubble.
She climbs out over the rubble. Over the PA:
MICHAEL (o.s.)
Robin! Get in!
She hurries to the car and climbs in.
INT. KNIGHT 2000
They hug.
K.I.T.T.
Now where, Michael?
ROBIN
Who said that?
MICHAEL
Let's go pay the General a visit!
ROBIN
Is this a car -- or a spaceship?
MICHAEL
A little of both.
WEISS AND KOSKO
line the blue shells up to three red ones. Weiss loads one
of the red ones into a Howitzer and fires.
KNIGHT 2000
heading to Duncton's bunker. The only thing between them is
the Howitzers.
WEISS AND KOSKO
load up another red shell. There is but one left.
KNIGHT 2000
K.I.T.T.
Michael, we're getting closer to
the guns!
MICHAEL
That's the idea!
WEISS AND KOSKO
load up the last red shell and fire. Weiss starts to load
the blue shell.
INT. KNIGHT 2000
ROBIN
Head for the bunker...they won't
shoot us there!
Michael nods, swerves.
WEISS AND KOSKO
The blue shell is loaded. Kosko closes the breech. Reaches
for the chain....
WEISS
Isn't that the car that....
KOSKO
No.
WEISS
Yes!
KOSKO
Yeah?
TO INCLUDE KNIGHT 2000
The Knight 2000 swerves wildly close to Weiss and Kosko's
howitzer. Swipes the sandbags at the emplacement.
WEISS AND KOSKO
Their weapon tilts. A sandstorm of sand blows over them.
The blue shell drops from the breech onto Kosko's foot. He
yells.
MP JEEPS
come tearing up to the artillery area.
THE KNIGHT 2000
goes for Duncton's bunker.
INT. DUNCTON'S BUNKER
The Aide is on the phone.
DUNCTON
Is the black car destroyed? Is it?
The bunker wall suddenly shatters apart. The Knight 2000
drives over the rubble. Behind it are the MPs. Duncton
looks sick.

EXT. PATTON MOTEL - MORNING
As Michael loads his luggage into the Knight 2000, Robin
drives into the parking lot in a Jeep.
ROBIN
I've come to say thanks...for every-
thing. It's still so hard to believe
...my father died for their greed.
Michael comes up close to her.
MICHAEL
Your father died -- doing his duty
for our country. A soldier's death.
She smiles.
MICHAEL
Are you going to put in for a
transfer?
She shakes her head no.
ROBIN
I guess I'm like my father -- I'm a
desert person.
MICHAEL
I guess I'm a...road person.
They laugh. Robin reaches behind the seat and picks up an
Army cap. She hands it to Michael.
ROBIN
A little something to remember me
by.
He takes it.
ROBIN
You know something? It's been a long
time since I've been this impressed
by a guy's car. How can I thank it?
Kiss it?
MICHAEL
How about a substitute?
ROBIN
A truck?
MICHAEL
A driver.
She leans over. They almost kiss -- when Michael sees
Beatrice and Alvin watching them from the motel office. They
are standing arm in arm, smiling and waving. Michael and
Robin laugh again -- and they kiss, a nice, leisurely kiss.
When the kiss is over, Robin reaches into her jacket pocket
and holds up a bumper sticker.
ROBIN
Then this can be for Kitt.
INSERT - BUMPER STICKER
Which reads: "GO ARMY!"
THE JEEP
Michael takes it, then steps back. He starts to salute,
then puts on the cap. Now he salutes. She salutes him back.
CLOSE ON "GO ARMY!" BUMPER STICKER
Affixed to the back bumper of the Knight 2000.
Camera widens to reveal the car is on Mr. Clay Feltzer's
street. It slams to a halt behind the Foundation semi.
THE SCENE
Michael hops out, runs toward the house -- only to be
stopped by Bonnie, who leans against a parked car. Nearby
are two Foundation lawyers, sporting some bandages.
BONNIE
(to Michael)
You're too late....
She points to ---
DEVON - OUTSIDE MR. FELTZER'S HOUSE - DAY
Devon takes a deep breath, knocks on the door. A beat. We
hear heavy footsteps approaching from within.
MICHAEL AND BONNIE
watching like the crowd at the Holmes-Cooney fight.
BACK TO SCENE
Mountainous Mr. Feltzer opens the door, scowling.
FELTZER
Whaddya want?
DEVON
Mr. Feltzer, I need to converse with
you.
FELTZER
Are you one of those lawyers?
DEVON
No, sir. I am not a barrister.
Feltzer's trying to figure out what he said.
FELTZER
Then you're a salesman. If there's
one thing I hate worse than lawyers,
it's salesmen.
DEVON
No, sir. I am not a purveyor of
merchandise.
FELTZER
You know something -- you talk funny.
Devon gulps, silently curses Michael Knight.
FELTZER
You talk just like that guy on
Masterpiece Theater.
(beat)
I love Masterpiece Theater!
Feltzer smiles. Devon's speechless.
FELTZER
Come on in and have some breakfast,
big guy.
Feltzer puts his arm around Devon, pulls him into the house.
FELTZER
Hey, Mona -- set another place.
Alabaster Cook is here!
MICHAEL AND BONNIE
as they react, amazed, we:
