TRIVIA:

Richard (Wilton Knight) Basehart died on September 17, 1984, a few weeks before the third season premiere Knight of the Drones was first telecast. His opening title voice-over continued to be used for the remainder of the series' run. (The first episode to use the narration is Good Day At White Rock.)

Shawn Southwick returned the following year for the second season premiere Goliath. Pamela Susan Shoop was a Glen Larson contract player and appeared in many of his shows. She would return to Knight Rider for the fourth season premiere Knight of the Juggernaut. Lance LeGault also appeared in the episode A Knight in Shining Armor, and is best known for playing Colonel Decker in The A-Team.

SCRIPT TO SCREEN:

Early drafts of the script saw Lonnie as Michael Long's partner. She was killed by Tanya out in the desert, and it is she who he is also trying to avenge -- they were "more than friends." NBC press releases for the movie's TV premiere still referred to that partnership.

Later drafts kept Lonnie alive as a member of Tanya's gang. Since the earlier desert scenes had already been filmed, it meant careful rewriting, shooting and editing to achieve the major plot changes.

The car thief subplot involving Jackson and Browne was not part of the original script. It was added to the pilot when it was discovered the episode ran too short. The production team decided to take advantage of this extra time to inject some humor into the story, and let K.I.T.T. star for a few scenes by himself. This extra material was filmed during the making of Good Day At White Rock.

The Foundation was originally called the "Foundation for Law and Justice." This also makes it to the first draft of the Inside Out script before the name "Foundation for Law and Government" (and the acronym "F.L.A.G.") was settled for.

Devon's original last name was "Shire." Dr. Wesley -- the plastic surgeon who rebuilds Michael's face -- was the original custodian of the Miles surname.

Scenes that never made the final cut include an exchange between Wilton and Devon (in which Knight impresses upon his friend that Michael is the right choice as their driver), Knight's funeral, and a brief epilogue where K.I.T.T. drops Michael at the hospital complaining of "acute exhaustion."
