Kilmer Talks K.I.T.T.!

Coming Soon have interviewed Val Kilmer, and took the opportunity to ask him about the role of K.I.T.T.!

“It was a really weird happy accident,” he said. “It was very strange just because they called me, not Wednesday afternoon, it was Wednesday about 8:30 at night. I live in the wilderness and my private phone just never rings because if you know me, you call the cell because I travel a lot. It was ringing and I looked at the phone like, ‘That’s really weird. Someone’s calling me.’ Went over, picked it up and it was the agency saying, ‘Do you want to be the voice of K.I.T.T.?’ and I said, ‘I remember that show. It was fun when I was a kid, sure. Should I do a tape?’ ‘No, it’s not an audition. They’re offering it to you.’ I said, ‘When?’ ‘Tomorrow at 7:00.’ What had happened and I can’t take any credit for it at all, is that the actor Will Arnett, someone had seen him on the commercial for a car company and called him up and said, ‘I think we have a problem.’ He’d signed, done the job and been paid for it, but then they found out his voice is owned for another car company, which they found out by accident.”

They also asked if he would continue with the role throughout the series: “I’m doing it right now. I haven’t done it yet, but I do the whole show in 3 or 4 hours.”

Heads Up!

More details have started to emerge about the new series. TV Guide got the scoop on some of the car’s new features from showrunner Gary Scott Thompson: “The car’s windshield turns into a touch screen you can interact with while driving 300 miles an hour,” executive producer Gary Scott Thompson says. We will learn more secrets about Mike’s past as an Iraq War vet, and three additional characters join the cast, including techie Billy Morgan (Paul Campbell of Battlestar Galactica). “It won’t just be like Michael Knight calling Devon from jail when he needed help,” Thompson says. “They’ll be pulling off missions as an actual team.”

KITTsite.com have also learned that the third show has the working title Journey to the End of Knight, which involves Mike being reunited with an old friend, and K.I.T.T. transforms into a 4×4 variation.

Benchwarmers K.I.T.T. Replica Fails to Sell

The long running saga of the K.I.T.T. replica featured in the movie Benchwarmers continues; after being listed on eBay for the third time, it has failed to sell. The auction closed yesterday with no bids placed on the vehicle, which was modified by customiser George Barris to look like Knight Rider‘s Super-Pursuit Mode, a feature that was introduced in the fourth season of the Original Series.

The car was part of the estate of murdered businessman Andrew Kissel, and the first auction was halted when fans questioned the car’s authenticity. It returned to eBay last month and garnered worldwide publicity that led to a flurry of 43 bids, eventually closing at $53,000, although the sale was not completed.

NBC Official Knight Site Updated

A new KR logo, and a message: Return for an announcement from Knight Industries on July 25, 2008.

It’s interesting that this coincides on the weekend of the San Diego Comic Con, where Knight Rider will be having a high-profile presence. Could it be something to do with the new Attack K.I.T.T., perhaps?

"Can Your Car Do This?"

SFX Magazine is really Knight Rider-centric this month; they have a one-page article (Drive Time) on the new series, with some very interesting comments from Gary Scott Thompson. A taster:

“I guess the biggest thing is that I was watching the ‘two-hour’ and I thought, ‘In the early ’80s, cars didn’t talk. Now everybody‘s car talks.’ So big deal! What was missing for me was, ‘Can your car do this?’ I said to NBC, ‘That’s what you guys are missing and that’s what you’ve got to do. This car has to not just change colours — this car has to transform into other vehicles. This car has to actually do things. Nano-technology is limitless. Why would you limit what you can do when the whole world is open to you? And with visual effects the way they are now, there’s nothing you can’t do.’ I told them that it has to be balls-to-the-wall fast-paced action and it just has to go, go, go. My biggest objection about the ‘two-hour’ is that it played just like an episode from the ’80s and we’re not in the ’80s any more.

“The characters besides K.I.T.T. have to be fully-three-dimensional, outstanding and people you want to be around. The car is one thing, but the people need to be something else. Nothing against the ‘two-hour’, but all I know is that going forward this has to be much more elevated.”

The issue also has a four-page spread dedicated to the Original Series, with rundowns on the greatest episodes, best baddies, and some of K.I.T.T.’s coolest features.

It’s Issue #172, August 2008. Check it out!
