1982 – Today is the anniversary of a momentous moment in Knight Rider history: 31 years ago today, Las Vegas cop Michael Long was shot by industrial saboteurs, kickstarting a series of events that would lead to his second life as a lone crusader in a dangerous world… the world of the Knight Rider!

1983 – After a promotional tour of South Africa, David Hasselhoff returned to the States to play the part of Michael Knight’s evil, African-themed twin Garthe Knight. Yes, the fan-favourite episode Goliath started filming on August 8th, 1983 on location in Las Vegas.

1986 – August 8 was also a sad day in the Knight Rider calendar: the last episode of Knight Rider ever in Prime Time on NBC ran on this date. The show was Redemption of a Champion, guest starring Ken Norton as a former boxing champ who Michael must persuade not to get back in the ring. Promoter Don King makes a special appearance along with a host of former boxers including Jerry Quarry, Carlos Palomino and Danny Lopez.

A Visit to Knightrider Street, London

As subscribers to our Facebook page will know, I recently visited a London landmark that is very popular with Knight Rider fans, and has always been on my list of places to visit.

Knightrider Street!

Knightrider Street!

Yes, London, England has its very own Knightrider Street, and it’s located in the very heart of the city, just a short walk from St. Paul’s Cathedral. While he was appearing on stage here in the musical Chicago, David Hasselhoff stayed nearby and was a frequent visitor.

Of course, the street’s name doesn’t come from a tribute for the television series, or out of some kind of Hasselhoff hero-worship. It’s named for the processions of medieval Knights that came from the nearby Tower of London on their way to Smithfield where jousting tournaments were held. Fans of the series from around the world love to visit and pose with that street sign.

The Centre Page Pub on Knightrider Street

At the end of the road sits the Centre Page, a traditional London pub with a rich history dating back to the 1600s. It was partially destroyed by the Great Fire of London, and also survived the Blitz of World War II. Samuel Pepys mentioned the pub in his historic diary, and Charles Dickens namechecks it in The Pickwick Papers; it is also said that Guy Fawkes held meetings here about his Gunpowder Plot. The Centre Page serves food and drink in a friendly atmosphere, and it features a display of framed autographs of David from his many visits here. Fans will get a kick out of his personalised message, which reads: “The Real Knight Rider!” Their website also has a small gallery of photos from some of his visits.

At the end of the street you can also find the adjoining Knightrider Court, which is home to an office building known as Knightrider House. (As this is a working place of business, if visiting the area please do not disturb!)

Knight Rider Comic News!

As we reported last Tuesday, Lion Forge Comics attended the San Diego Comic Con over the weekend… but Saturday evening was what Knight Rider fans were waiting for: the Lion Forge panel. A piece of cover art by Jason Johnson was due to be unveiled at the event, and fans around the world looked forward to finding out more about this new project in terms of character design. Would Johnson be using David Hasselhoff’s likeness? What form would the new, 21st Century K.I.T.T. be taking? How would the supporting cast be used?

Unfortunately the artwork didn’t make an appearance… But we’ve managed to get those answers.

What we have learned comes from the book’s writer Geoff Thorne, who revealed to us via Twitter that he has seen the cover art and “Jason is killing this. It’s gonna LOOK awesome.”

The first 8-issue ‘season’ will be composed of both stand-alone stories that double as chapters in a greater story-arc. The first arc will be “Re-indroductions. Introing the new stuff. Sort of an underlying “big bad,” but each arc stands alone.”

An underlying “big bad”? Knight Rider had a few of those, and fans will undoubtedly be screaming Garthe Knight, Goliath and K.A.R.R. at this point! Thorne remains tightlipped. “What can I say to this? Some familiar enemies are bound to appear. NONE quite the same as you expect.”

While enemies might return in unexpected new ways, Thorne is approaching the character of Michael Knight in much the same way as David Hasselhoff portrayed him in the original series. “Michael is a classic hero. Bit roguish, bit irreverent but with a perfect moral compass, so I’m playing him that way. He’s every cop or fireman who runs TOWARD trouble rather than away from it. He’s THAT guy.”

As for the supporting cast, there is one major new friend being introduced to the team. Not everyone will show up in the first arc, and not everyone will be exactly as you expect. They will also be Jason Johnson’s own character designs, as Thorne suggests that Lion Forge don’t have the rights to the actors’ likenesses. Currently they are only drawing from Knight Rider: The Original Series, but “Moving forward, if it makes a good story, the entire universe is fair game,” so we could possibly see new versions of characters from the spin-offs as well.

But you want to know about K.I.T.T., right?

“This ain’t yer grandma’s K.I.T.T. (Cue evil laugh),” Thorne says. “They don’t make the vehicle the original K.I.T.T. inhabited anymore. K.I.T.T. will be unique but not necessarily alone. (Evil laugh)” But does he retain his iconic functions, for example the Turbo Boost or Ski Mode? “The first arc doesn’t call for most of that stuff. Rest assured, K.I.T.T.’s totally badass. Tech has come a long way since the 1980s.”

The book itself won’t follow the current trends with an excessively dark and gritty style. “I don’t do dark & gritty. I do adventure. There will be down moments but I’m not interested in hyper-violent/psychotic ‘heroes.'” It should be a fun read.

Thorne watched quite a few original series episodes before he started writing, and cited the season four episode Knight of the Rising Sun as a favourite. He also revealed that the fan-favourite idea of a Knight Rider/Airwolf crossover has also been floated! “It’s something we all seem to want. There just has to be space for it. Right now everybody’s just locking in their reboots.” If the books are successful, don’t rule out the possibility of a Michael Knight-Stringfellow Hawke team-up in the future!

The first book will be available on Amazon in September!

Is the Comlink Becoming a Reality?

Apple's new iWatch concept

We all remember the famous comlink that Michael wore during the show and its capabilities. Recent reports state that Apple have patented the name iWatch to their brand, and from rumours of its functions the comlink may becoming more of a reality.

The new iWatch is understood to communicate wirelessly with the iPhone and provides interactivity without having to remove the iPhone from your pocket. Email and text message notifications are said to appear on the screen giving the user information about recent communications. Siri can be activated by talking to the watch and can be activated by a word or a phrase.

Maybe one day they will link the technology with our cars in lieu of key fobs to act as a ‘smart’ entry and start/stop, system!
